  1. The lack of color coding will make it more difficult for Android users to determine whether someone has their read receipts off or they’re using an iPhone.
  2. Assuming you’re using the RCS function, you can see others’ read receipts, and they can see yours.
  3. But older Androids do not have any such feature.

If another user enabled read receipts, you would receive feedback such as “Sent,” “Delivered,” and “Read,” as shown below. Read receipts can be disabled within the Chat settings in Messages. If someone has read receipts disabled, the feedback won’t appear next to the messages.

Why is my iPhone showing Messages as read?

A recurring iOS bug that makes Apple’s Messages app send read receipts despite the setting being disabled appears to be on the upswing again, based on reports from users running iOS 15. In iOS, with read receipts enabled (Settings -> Messages -> Send Read Receipts), the “Delivered” text that a person sees under an iMessage they have sent you turns to “Read” when you’ve viewed it in the conversation thread, so they know you’ve seen the message even if you’ve not responded. The setting syncs across all Apple devices signed into the same Apple ID, Over the last few years there have been sporadic reports that Messages doesn’t always observe the user setting, but according to Macworld ‘s Glenn Fleishman, the bug appears to be rearing its head again, only this time for a larger number of users running the latest version of iOS 15. Some people have found that restarting their device resolves the problem, at least temporarily, but no permanent fix has been discovered, suggesting Apple needs to change something about the way the function works in a future update to its mobile operating system. We’ll update this article if we learn more.

Are read receipts a red flag?

Dating experts want you to turn off your read receipts. Immediately.

  • Once upon a time, arranging a date was as simple as sending a text message and waiting for a response – then everything got a bit Black Mirror,
  • Thanks to the arrival of read receipts, available on almost every social media platform, it’s never been easier to spend hours dissecting the intricacies of your partner’s communication habits.
  • From being able to track their activity via the ominous “last seen” feature on WhatsApp and Instagram to knowing whether they’ve read your last message on everything in between, the transparency of today’s digital communication might seem like a blessing and a curse, but it’s mostly the latter,
  • It doesn’t take a Freudian analysis to realise that pining after every blue tick and yelping out every time you see your beloved is “online” (no, they can’t see you) is a fairly unhealthy mindset to have when you’re dating someone.
  • Hence why dating psychologist recommends turning read receipts off altogether.
  • “If you have a tendency to overthink things and get mini panics over seeing someone having read your message and not replying, then I would suggest turning the function off completely,” she told The Independent.

While she explains that the non-reply or delayed reply is not necessarily psychologically damaging in and of itself, it can foster unhelpful feelings of rejection, “It can also trigger a psychological response (i.e. panic) that has resulted from psychological damage at an earlier point in life,” she added.

  1. While there are obvious reasons for delayed responses – travelling, being with friends, working – the immediacy with which we’re able to communicate digitally naturally elicits expectations of a speedy exchange.
  2. Therefore, when someone takes a little longer to reply than we might hope, it can generate a plethora of anxieties which are only exacerbated by read receipts.
  3. For example, when you see that a partner hasn’t opened your message on a platform but has been active elsewhere, it explicitly vindicates feelings of being ignored, which are easier for some to swallow than others.
  4. “It’s a feeling that’s ubiquitous across social media messaging,” explains 23-year-old Rose*.

“If you’ve been waiting for a guy to reply to a direct message on Instagram for three days and can see they’ve been actively posting pictures the entire time, it’s inevitably going to make you wonder why they’re choosing to consciously ignore you, particularly as they’ll know you can see their posts.

  • Not to mention the fact that this way of communication – or lack thereof – inherently endorses the concept of “playing it cool”, which is why 32-year-old Tim* decided to turn his read receipts off on all platforms.
  • ” I had no interest in trying to game someone by letting them see I’d read their message and chosen not to respond,” he told The Independent,
  • “Then, once I got into a relationship, I decided to leave them off for a different reason – I can’t handle the pressure of someone expecting a response immediately as soon as I’ve seen their message, and wondering if something is wrong if I don’t reply straight away.”
  • According to dating coach, read receipts can give rise to a number of problems in relationships because they amplify mismatches in communication preferences.
  • “One person might assume that by purposefully not replying, you are hiding something or keeping secrets,” he told The Independent,
  • “The more you do it then the worse it will get; they can’t understand why you aren’t making them a priority by replying.”

However, Mason adds that a person’s feelings towards read receipts are highly dependent on the individual, who may be more vulnerable to emotional distress if they have self-esteem issues or a lack of confidence in the relationship. If neither of these things are a problem, read receipts should be irrelevant, she said.

For 25-year-old Bea*, read receipts provide an essential transparency to her dating communications. “It really annoys me when guys turn their read receipts off on WhatsApp,” she told The Independent. “It makes it seem like someone is playing a game and trying to hide things from you. I’m not going to get anxious because you’ve seen my message and haven’t replied yet.

“I know that more often than not we read a message and don’t have time to reply straight away. So why turn off read receipts? It makes no sense to me.”

  1. So, to turn them off or keep them on?
  2. Choose at your own peril: the course of true love never did run smooth, with or without a blue tick.
  3. *Names have been changed.

Why does a guy turn on read receipts?

Here it is! The second episode of a new Verge podcast called Why’d You Push That Button, On this show, my colleague, Circuit Breaker ‘s Ashley Carman, and me, the Culture section’s most self-indulgent blogger, talk about all the tiny decisions your gadgets and apps force you to make every day.

All day, every day, we’re pushing buttons and thinking about the intended or unintended consequences. We’re interviewing consumers — including friends, co-workers, loved ones, and some strangers — and then we’re talking to product designers and experts who built the tech or have studied it professionally.

Last week, we started things off with Tinder’s Super Like feature, This week, we’re talking about read receipts — the timestamp that’s optional in iMessage and mandatory in Facebook Messenger, that lets anyone who’s trying to correspond with you know exactly when you saw their words and chose not to respond.

Why do you leave them on? Why do you turn them off? Why must you insist on subtly manipulating every person in your life? We heard from our friends who have made these choices, and then we took their responses to Lujayn Alhddad, who studied human-computer interaction while obtaining her master’s degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

She wrote a paper on this exact topic, and she knows what’s up. Listen to the full podcast and check out the transcription of Lujayn’s interview below. You can also find us everywhere you find podcasts: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play Music, and our RSS feed,

  • I’m talking to Lujayn Alhddad about a research paper she wrote while she was in grad school about read receipts and the effects they have on people.
  • Hi, Lujayn! Hi, Ashley! Thanks for being on this call.
  • I know you’re all the way in Saudi Arabia right now.
  • It’s nice to be here.
  • Can you tell us about your research project and what you were looking into? Sure.

So my research was about the desire of using read receipts in, And I was studying the factors that affect the desire this feature. I had two factors : the relationship between the sender and receiver, and also the role of the user and the messaging log.

  • Do I want to know when you read your message? And as a receiver, do I want you to know if I read your message or not? What did you eventually conclude about how people use read receipts and how they react to them? The two factors proved that people have different opinions on using the feature.
  • It depends on the relationship between the receiver and sender.

So people in romantic relationships, or closer relationships — we call in our research a strong tie or strong relationship — are more likely to want to use the feature. They are less likely to use it with someone who they have a weak relationship, They aren’t really close with each other.

People also want to receive the read receipts, but don’t want to send it with everyone. So they want to see that their friend saw it, but they don’t want their friend to know they saw it? Exactly. You were looking at applications other than iMessage, correct? I was looking at WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook Messenger.

You might be interested:  How Many Bones Do Sharks Have?

So all these applications, not just iMessage. Why do you think people don’t mind having read receipts on with people who they know personally, like romantic relationships, versus people they’re acquaintances with? People freak out about read receipts in general because there’s a social pressure.

They feel like they have to respond immediately. So to avoid this pressure, they avoid opening the message until they have the reply prepared. There’s an expectation, like people say they saw online a minute or two minutes ago, or read the first message, didn’t reply to the second message. So this is too much pressure.

So people feel more comfortable using this feature with people who are close to them because they don’t feel that pressure with them. Let’s say you have a close friend, or boyfriend, or girlfriend, they usually know where we are and when. We feel comfortable and don’t feel the pressure to reply because they know our availability.

So people who we don’t mind knowing where we are at all times, we feel okay with letting them see read receipts. We know we’ll get back to them eventually. Whereas someone who doesn’t know our daily schedule, there might be more pressure. What are the benefits of read receipts? Do you see any? I do see some benefits.

Back when we only had SMS, messages were sent in multiple messages, so we didn’t know the order. And now we can see the order they arrive in. If I sent you something important, I don’t need to resend it if I know you got it. Sometimes, if we have a meeting, we can send Some people say there’s no harm to being honest, when I don’t reply to someone I’m ignoring.

  1. They say, “I’m happy they know I’m ignoring them.” Honestly sometimes I do that.
  2. Do you have read receipts on? Yes, because I like being honest with everyone.
  3. I like the benefits of read receipts, and I don’t care if I come off as harsh or something for not replying.
  4. I want you to know that I read you message.

I just won’t reply. It’s business. Exactly. Finally, obviously a lot of apps and software have read receipts as an option. Have you thought about features companies could incorporate to improve the product? Yes, shouldn’t be mandatory for users. They should be able to turn it on or off.

  • People want to use it with some people and not others, so it’s good to have controls WhatsApp is all on or all off.
  • Facebook Messenger has no controls.
  • Do you have anything else? Yes, 56 percent of my teens group didn’t know about read receipts.
  • They were the higher percentage group using the application, but they had no idea if the feature was on or off.

This is a privacy concern because these features are sharing an actual time and date. Yeah, that happened to one of my friends who had accidentally turned them on, and he wasn’t aware until someone called him out on it. The thing is that it’s on by default.

Do read receipts work both ways?

Read receipts are only sent by your phone when you have them on. If the other person has them on, you will continue to get receipts from them, but they will not get anything from you.
