Did she write one major article and then expect special treatment? Her boss was giving her an opportunity that I, as a 23-year-old assistant, would have loved, and that reaction now seems bratty and entitled.

Plus, isn’t it normal to leave your first job out of college for a better opportunity? Your 20s, especially your early 20s, are about taking risks, and Andie quitting in hopes of getting another job is an average example of doing just that. To be fair, I do remember what it was like to be 23 and feel impatient about my career.

• I, too, struggled to find the perfect fit, and felt like I had to constantly prove myself in order to receive any additional responsibility.

• No one is going to just hand you what you want.
• On top of showing your talent, you have to push for it and continue to advocate for yourself, or eventually move on to something different.

Ahead of her show with the V&A’s Fashion in Motion series, we speak with the designer about inspirations, fashion in China, and that Rihanna dress – When Rihanna turned up to the 2015 Met Gala wearing that yellow dress, Guo Pei, the creative force who designed the ornate gown, saw her life change.

• The dress, which weighed 25 kilograms, carried a three-meter-long train, and took 6,000 hours to put together, became instantly iconic.
• But despite already having a career spanning three decades, after the “Yellow Queen” dress hit the red carpet, the Chinese designer had her first-ever solo exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, was named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, and one of the Business of Fashion ‘s 500 most influential people.

Her otherworldly and ornate designs have seen her become one of China’s most foremost designers. Earlier this year, Pei received critical acclaim for her AW19 Couture collection entitled an “Alternate Universe Couture” which presented ornate, complex, and entirely unique pieces.

Inspired by fairy tales, myth, and death, the show opened with two models conjoined in a two-for-one pannier skirt, embroidered with mythical creatures and circus animals. Elsewhere in the collection, decorative crows and incubating eggs nestled into crafted nests which were carved into skirts, dresses were decorated with puppets controlled by a monkey figurine, and models were turned into mummies.

Now, presenting the aforementioned collection as a runway show at the V&A in her first time presenting in the UK, we spoke with the designer about life, death, and fairy tales.

Was Gabrielle the designer who created the little black dress?

In 1926 Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel published a picture of a short, simple black dress in American Vogue, It was calf-length, straight and decorated only by a few diagonal lines. Vogue called it “Chanel’s Ford”. Like the Model T, the little black dress was simple and accessible for women of all social classes.

Vogue also said that the LBD would become “a sort of uniform for all women of taste”. This, as well as other designs by the house of Chanel helped disassociate black from mourning, and reinvent it as the uniform of the high-class, wealthy, and chic. As Coco herself proclaimed, “I imposed black; it’s still going strong today, for black wipes out everything else around.” The little black dress continued to be popular through the Great Depression, predominantly through its economy and elegance, albeit with the line lengthened somewhat.

Hollywood ‘s influence on fashion helped the little black dress’s popularity, but for more practical reasons: as Technicolor films became more common, filmmakers relied on little black dresses because other colors looked distorted on screen and botched the coloring process. Variations on Chanel’s little black dress during the Chanel: The Legend exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague in 2014 The rise of Dior’s “New Look” in the post-war era and the sexual conservatism of the 1950s returned the little black dress to its roots as a uniform and a symbol of the dangerous woman.

The generation gap of the 1960s created a dichotomy in the design of the little black dress. The younger ” mod ” generation preferred, in general, a miniskirt on their versions of the dress and designers catering to the youth culture continued to push the envelope – shortening the skirt even more, creating cutouts or slits in the skirt or bodice of the dress, using sheer fabrics such as netting or tulle,

Many women aspired to simple black sheath dresses similar to the black Givenchy dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the acclaimed film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The popularity of casual fabrics, especially knits, for dress and business wear during the 1980s brought the little black dress back into vogue. Coupled with the fitness craze, the new designs incorporated details already popular at the time such as broad shoulders or peplums : later in the decade and into the 1990s, simpler designs in a variety of lengths and fullness were popular.

The grunge culture of the 1990s saw the combination of the little black dress with both sandals and combat boots, though the dress itself remained simple in cut and fabric. The new glamour of the late 1990s led to new variations of the dress but, like the 1950s and the 1970s, colour re-emerged as a factor in fashion and formalwear and repeatedly shows an aversion to black.

Who designed Doris Day’s clothes?

Doris Day’s screen-style legacy for working women was all about what to wear — not bare Doris Day,, appeared on screen as a wide range of characters in an even wider range of costumes from buckskin and bandanas (in 1953’s “Calamity Jane”) to a thigh-grazing, heart-festooned pair of short pajamas (in 1957’s “The Pajama Game”), with a costume warehouse full of clothes including (but far from limited to) elegant, white one-shouldered gowns, exploded houndstooth check jackets and flouncy peignoirs in between.

• But Day’s lasting fashion influence — beyond the screen — was cemented with a troika of movies that cast her as a powerful woman in the workplace in the late 1950s and early ’60s.
• In “Teacher’s Pet” (1958) she played a journalism teacher dressed by eight-time Oscar winner Edith Head; in “Pillow Talk” the following year she was an interior designer clad in costumes by Bill Thomas with gowns by Jean Louis.

And in 1961 she portrayed an ad executive dressed by the mononymous Irene in “Lover Come Back.” In each, a flurry of spectacular costumes seemed to empower Day’s characters, who glided elegantly through every workplace scenario, accessorized with her sunny disposition and can-do attitude.

Whether it was in a white column gown accessorized with a white fur shrug and white opera-length gloves, a navy blue, notch-lapel suit dress or a voluminous butter-yellow dressing gown, she was the working girl before “Working Girl” and a Mary Tyler Moore-level striver long before “Mary Tyler Moore.” It was a legacy that ended up following Day from the big screen to the small one too.

From 1968 to 1973, Day starred in the CBS sitcom “The Doris Day Show,” which followed her trials and tribulations as a ladder-climber at Today’s World magazine. According to The Times archives, Day was presented the American Working Girl Award (by Fashion Wagon, a division of the Minnesota Woolen Co.) on the set of the series in 1972.

The group’s then-president, Richard Polinsky, noted the honor was “because through her portrayal of a magazine associate editor of ‘The Doris Day Show’ she symbolizes the modern woman in the world of business.” “Her on-screen personality — her posture, her makeup, her costumes — was the whole package, and what American women of the late 1950s and early 1960s were trying to emulate,” said Christina Johnson, the associate curator for the FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising museum.

“In ‘Pillow Talk’ she wore a number of trim suits, with perfect accessories — so I can see professional women would want to emulate her — and she also represented the traditional girl next door.” Johnson says it was this latter persona that made her look popular — particularly among other women — at the time.

• Today we have so many different versions of femininity to draw on,” she said, “But at that time there was really only one or two that was an option for a woman — no matter her background.
• One was and the other was Marilyn Monroe as her on-screen antithesis.
• Those were your only two options — at least that’s what the filmmakers and the publicity machine would have you believe.” Victoria Brynner, a Beverly Hills-based consultant whose Stardust Brands connects fashion and luxury brands with creative talent, was one of the many who noted the actress’ death on Instagram, and she singled out that aspect of Day’s on-screen style as well.

“What was amazing about her, I think, was that she had the singing ability and the comedic capabilities but didn’t show cleavage,” Brynner said. “She was incredibly stylish, she looked fabulous but she wasn’t a sexpot. She knew how to do the body line — the cigarette pants, the skirts.
