Basically, all you have to do is give your frozen salmon a quick rinse to get rid of any ice crystals, then pop it in a hot oven for 12-17 minutes.

So simple, right? But don’t stop at salmon. This method works for any kind of fish fillet ( here’s a post about that ). In other words, you also don’t have to worry about defrosting cod, halibut, tuna, swordfish—all your favorites. As long as the pieces are no more than about 1 inch thick, this method will work.

Do you preheat air fryer for fish?

How to Cook Fish in an Air Fryer (Perfectly!) – So, ready to whip up a fast, fried fish feast? Here’s how to fry fish in an air fryer.

Take your fish from the fridge in advance to thaw (if needed)

While, yes, we did just say you can cook frozen fish directly in your air fryer without thawing, there are some exceptions. If you plan on breading your fish or cutting your filets into specifically portioned sizes, you’ll want to let the filets thaw in advance, either in the fridge overnight or in the sink, in cold water, for an hour or two.

    Portion your fish filets

If you’re planning to portion your fish filets, you can do so once they’re thawed. Portioning your fish filets so that they’re all relatively the same size will help ensure even cooking for the entire batch.

    Preheat your air fryer

Just like an oven, you’ll want to let your air fryer get nice and toasty before adding your fish. Remove the frying basket and then preheat. We recommend preheating your air fryer to 400 degrees, which will take about 10 minutes.

Add your fish to the air fryer basket

While the air fryer is preheating, you can go ahead and give the basket a quick spritz with some non-stick spray. Then, add your fish to the basket, being careful not to overcrowd the filets. Place them in a single layer. Remember, you want the hot air to be able to circulate around the entirety of each filet.

    Air fry your fish

Once the air fryer is preheated, place the basket inside and let the filets cook. Your cooking time will vary according to the size of your filets, as well as whether or not you’re cooking with any marinades, glazes or breading. Since some marinades, glazes and breading overcook quickly, you’ll want to lower the cooking temperature and cook your fish longer when cooking with any of these.

    • ▢ ½ cup all-purpose flour
    • ▢ ½ teaspoon ground paprika
    • ▢ ½ teaspoon onion powder
    • ▢ ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ▢ ½ teaspoon kosher salt
    • ▢ ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
    • ▢ 1 ⅓ cup panko breadcrumbs
    • ▢ Oil spray
    • ▢ Lemon wedges and tartar sauce, for serving
    • Pat fish dry. Whisk eggs in a shallow bowl and set aside. On a plate, mix together the spices and flour. Add the breadcrumbs to a separate plate.

    • Place several pieces of breaded fish into the air fryer basket and spray the top of the breaded fish with oil spray (depending on your fryer size you may need to cook in batches).
    • Cook on the air fry setting for 10-12 minutes at 400 degrees F, flipping halfway through, or until the fish is golden and flakes easily with a fork. Spray breaded fish with more oil spray as needed.
    • Remove the fish carefully and serve with a lemon wedge and tartar sauce for dipping, enjoy!
    • You can use fresh or frozen fish fillets that have been thawed completely for this recipe

    • To make a gluten-free version use almond flour instead of all-purpose flour and switch out the panko breadcrumbs for crushed GF cornflakes or GF breadcrumbs

Does fish thaw faster in water or in air?

A tenacious myth would have you believe the best way to thaw frozen food is slowly, in the refrigerator. But food science researchers say it’s just not so. – Most people know that food should be frozen as quickly as possible, to retain qualiy and flavour.

    1. The same turns out to be true when it comes to thawing frozen food, too —quicker is better.
    2. So says Susanne Ekstedt, a researcher at the Food and Bioscience unit of SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden in Gothenburg.
    3. This is something food scientists have known to be true for a long time now.
    4. But this knowledge is mostly confined to the food industry.

Most people don’t seem to be aware of this,” Ekstedt said. What often happens instead is that people thaw their meats slowly in the refrigerator. While keeping meat cold while thawing is important to limit bacterial growth, it’s possible to thaw food quickly in water.

Ekstedt’s recommendation is based on the institute’s own experiments with freezing and thawing different kinds of foods. Their conclusion: The best way to thaw frozen meat or fish is to put it in cold water. You have to wrap the food in plastic, of course, to keep the water out of the food, but water will thaw food quickly and effectively.

The reason for this is simple: Water conducts heat better than air. And the faster food is thawed, the better it tastes.
