Is Coachella OK for kids?
The Coachella Scene – Father and son watch a puppet show at Woodstock in August 1969. Image Source: Getty / Ralph Ackerman The phenomenon of kids swaying side by side next to their parents at music festivals is nothing new, After all, there are plenty of black-and-white photos of literal “flower” children cavorting half naked in the mud alongside their parents at Woodstock.
Still, it’s hard to compare Woodstock’s relatively minuscule and homogenous crowd and widely held hippie ethos of peace and love to a modern music festival like Coachella. Coachella is less a music festival than a massive cultural event, drawing a cross section of musicians, fashion bloggers, foodies, burnouts, brand consultants, party promoters — and, yes, families with kids.
In short, Coachella looks nothing like Woodstock, and Coachella today looks nothing like Coachella did when it began in 1999. Then, a mere 25,000 people showed up to hear bands like Beck and Rage Against the Machine play for $50 per day. Cut to 17 years later, and the music festival itself is simply the hub of a major cultural and commercial event.
- This year’s headliners were as varied as ’90s hair rockers Guns N’ Roses, EDM star Calvin Harris, and hipster rapper A$AP Rocky.
- Last year, more than 198,000 people attended the two weekends of Coachella, and the resulting $84 million in ticket sales made it the highest-grossing music festival in the world, according to BoxScore.
Beyond that, easily thousands of others descended upon the Coachella Valley to attend the myriad parties and events that pop up on its fringes each year. Those bashes are hosted by fashion, media, and music companies and lifestyle and consumer brands, all eager for the cache of cool and the access to an upscale, youthful market Coachella weekend offers.

A festival goer makes a heart in front of the ferris wheel during the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA., Sunday, April 22, 2018. (Staff photo by Jennifer Cappuccio Maher, The Press-Enterprise/SCNG) What is Coachella? OMG are you serious? If you don’t know that by now you probably have no business attending, but fine we’ll explain anyway.
It’s not just a concert but pretty much a musical village that rises from the desert twice a year. And it really does seem like a village with bars, general stores, barber shops, a record store, coffee shops, stunning art installations and thousands of people walking around all over the place. So yes, it’s selfie heaven and, oh yeah, there’s the music on multiple stages.
In other words, it’s the biggest and most significant music festival and cultural event of the year. How do I get to Coachella? Google Empire Polo Club in Indio. If you still can’t find your way there then maybe you’re not ready for this festival. But in 2020, you might be able to take a train from Los Angeles,
Where do I park at Coachella? The most important thing to know about parking is that you have to accept that no matter where you park — unless you get all fancy and fork over and extra $150 for preferred parking or buy a shuttle pass — you will have to walk a long long long way on hot dirt and sometimes warm mud to get to the festival.
Once you accept that unavoidable fact, you’re halfway there. The good news is that general parking is free and while it may seem overwhelming at first it’s actually simple, just get there early and follow the guys in the parking lot waving you in and go wherever they tell you.
With this many cars it only works if you follow their plan. And please, please, please look up and make sure you remember the sign that tells you where you parked, because if you forget you will never ever ever find your car again. Just kidding, you will, like probably the next day. Sign up for our Festival Pass newsletter,

What do I wear to Coachella? Throughout the years, Coachella has turned into a fashion show, In recent years floral dressers, pants and skirts as well as short short shorts and tons of body glitter have been popular with the ladies. The guys usually keep it simple with shorts, short sleeve button shirts or even glam it up a bit with “romp-hims,” which is the dude version of a romper that for some reason was really popular last year.
- There really are no rules on fashion except for one: Survive the heat.
- If this is your first time going then you have no idea how hot it can get and how quickly heat stroke can get you.
- So keep it light, airy, comfy and don’t forget to wear shoes you can walk in for a few miles each day.
- But that cool worn leather jacket with the punk band patches or those to-die-for platform heels that look great with your booty shorts should probably stay at home so you can live to look cool another day.
Where do I sleep at Coachella? If you haven’t booked your room by now good luck because hotels and Airbnb spots will be sold out. You can also camp at the festival, but that doesn’t mean just pulling over and popping up your tent on any open space you see like some lawless hippie squatter.
- No, you’ll have to pay $125 to camp with your car or tent on the festival grounds.
- But it’s actually pretty fun since the camground becomes its own community during the weekend with dance parties and games and you can also shower there and shop at a farmer’s market.
- What can I bring to Coachella? You drove all this way to the desert, you walked about a mile from your car to get to the gate and now do you really want to have to go back to your car to drop off that switchblade and the little bit of weed you thought you cleverly stashed in a lighter that you just found out you couldn’t bring in? No, no you don’t.
So make sure you read the list of all the things you can and can’t bring in on the Coachella website because it’s a long list and there are some surprising items not allowed in, such as hula hoops. Sorry hula hoopers, your hips aren’t going to be able to party as usual at Coachella.
- But yes, you can bring in your dancing shoes.
- No joke, dancing shoes were actually on the list of stuff you could bring in last year.
- Can I bring my kids to Coachella? Yes! Bring the little ones! Kids are allowed and every year it seems you see more and more parents come with their little hipsters.
- You can bring in a stroller, blankets and make sure you get those noise cancelling headphones too, since it can be overwhelming for some of the younger kids.
And of course no need to tell good parents this, but bring sunscreen. Dab it all over them. Cover them from head to toe because you don’t want your little hipsters going home looking like little lobsters. Do I to bring cash to Coachella? Simple answer. Nope.
ATM machines all over the place and you can use your card anywhere. So there’s no need to bring the wad of cash unless you want to make it rain during one of the performances. Wait, I forgot to buy tickets to Coachella. Should I go to a scalper? Try to sneak in? Or just cry? No, don’t do any of those things because two are illegal and one is just pathetic.
Instead, get on the handy-dandy waiting list where you can buy passes from poor suckers who defaulted on payment plans or had to cancel for some reason. Too bad so sad, you win they lose. This is the first year Coachella has partnered with Lyte to offer this option, A festival goer lays down near the Outdoor and Mojave stages at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio on Saturday, April 15, 2017. (Photo by Matt Masin, Orange County Register, SCNG) Oh no I forgot my sandals, and I can’t find my phone charger or my new sun hat, now what do I do? My, my, you’re a forgetful one.
But stop panicking, take a breath and think what would you do back home if you needed these kids of items. Go on Amazon, of course. And now you can do that for Coachella, too, because the online retail giant announced that they will have Amazon Lockers at Coachella so you can order and pick up stuff you need right at the festival.
Once the festival is closer Amazon will set up a Coachella storefront at amazon.com/Coachella where you can shop for items that will be delivered to the festival grounds. All you need to do is order, select Amazon Lockers at Coachella as your shipping address and boom, you got some sweet new sandals and a rad new hat waiting for you.
- Https://www.coachella.com/faq/ What’s the worst thing I could do at Coachella? Lots, but one of the top no-nos is drinking too much booze too soon.
- Seriously, not only is it a waste of an expensive ticket if you pass out by 3 p.m.
- And miss all the music, it’s also hot, like really hot, and alcohol dehydrates you so it could be seriously dangerous.
So start slow, maybe a beer here and there with lots of water in between. Can my band play at Coachella? No. Well, OK, we don’t want to destroy any dreams so for this one we’ll quote the Coachella website directly since apparently so many people ask they felt the need to address it.
Does Coachella check ID?
Don’t Rush Straight to the Bar – There are ID check kiosks within the festival, so don’t waste 15 minutes waiting in line at the bar just to be turned away because you don’t have an over-21 wristband (I learned this one the hard way!). If you have a General Admission pass, you won’t even be granted access to the Beer Garden without a wristband.
Is Coachella just for famous people?
Coachella concert-goers reveal what festival is like when you’re ‘not a celebrity’ festival-goers have shared a candid look at the realities of attending the three-day concert when “you are not a celebrity”. The first weekend of the annual music festival in Indio, California, was this past weekend, with thousands of fans pouring into the desert to see performances from a star-studded lineup of artists.
- In response, many have taken to to share this realistic view of a Coachella weekend and viewers can’t help but be surprised.
- In one, shared by a user named Kaela who goes by @kaelalala24 on TikTok, a woman talks about waking up at 6am on Coachella day one because she had to use the portable toilets.
- “It’s currently six in the morning, I woke up early because I have to use the Porta Potties, which I’ve already had four anxiety attacks over, I’m not even kidding when I say that,” she said.
Kaela was one of the thousands camping at Coachella, which costs an additional $149 on top of the $549 ticket cost. In her video, she said she would be scoping out the “shower situation”. “Hopefully, the line isn’t too long,” Kaela said, before filming the long line of people waiting their turn to use the showers.
- At 8.20am, the TikToker said she and her friend had been in line for an hour and 20 minutes.
- As she waited to take a shower, Kaela took the opportunity to ask fellow attendees how they “feel,” with one woman responding: “I feel dirty,” while another said: “I feel dusty.” Kaela then updated viewers about the shower experience.
“I actually had water pressure, but my other friends did not. They said they had four dribbles of water and they had to cup the water to,” the TikToker said, before noting that “overall” the wait to use the showers was only an hour and a half. As she updated her followers, she ate a Spam sandwich in her tent while she waited for the festival to start.
In the comments under Kaela’s video, which has since been viewed more than four million times, viewers expressed their appreciation, and surprise. “Thank you for this, confirms I will never do this” one person commented, while another said: “Thank you. Finally the realistic side of Coachella. I went in 2014 and never again.” “I salute your positive attitude,” someone else jokingly admitted.
“I went once and will never do it again. Hotel me please.” In another, shared by a user named Jackie who goes by the username @jackietanti, the woman posted another perspective about camping at Coachella. Jackie said in her video that setting up their tent had gone smoothly, but that she and her friends ultimately struggled when their air mattress wouldn’t inflate.
- In another, Jackie
- “Capitalism really popped off today,” she said, before adding in the caption: “The sh***iest part of Coachella.”
- “I gasped,” one viewer admitted, while another said: “I can justify the ticket cost, but not the food, camping or anything else.”
Other videos broke down the costs of a day of food at Coachella, while some documented their and fellow attendees’, Some concert-goers even said they waited hours just to get a good view of the performance.
- A user named Sahory, who goes by @sahorybet on TikTok, also shared a showing what it is like to “get ready at Coachella when you are not a celebrity”.
- In the video, Sahory showed a huge tent set up with various mirrors and a huge crowd of people waiting in line to get ready for the festival.
- “I feel for how much it is to be there, the accommodations should be better,” one person commented.
- Another said: “I cannot imagine the stress I would feel knowing people are waiting on me to finish my makeup.”
- The set up surprised some viewers, with many revealing that they’d expected less from the festival when considering the other camping amenities.
“This is the best thing I’ve seen about Coachella. Absolutely adorable,” one person commented, while someone else wrote: “Wait, this is kinda fun, a big get ready party is so cute.” This is not the first time attendees have shared the downsides of Coachella.
Should I let my 17 year old go to a festival?
Communication is key at a festival – Credit: Unsplash Judy Reith stresses that parents must talk to their children about the risks: “Because if you don’t, who will?” Although many parents could find these conversations hard, Judy suggests: “I’m your parent and I’d never forgive myself if anything happened to you, so I need to say this.” Some teenagers of 17 and 18 might be sexually active already, whether parents are aware of this or not, but discussions of safe sex and contraception need to be had even if, as Judy acknowledges, all you get is a groan and an, ‘Oh, Mum!’ Even children who would normally never touch drugs may be tempted in a festival atmosphere, but Judy reminds all parents: “You know your child best.
- If you feel your child is not old enough at 16 or 17 to cope with the peer pressure, or you aren’t happy about the people they intend to go with, then you have to say no.
- Children differ hugely in their maturity and one 17-year-old may be very streetwise while another may be very naive.” For many families, the compromise is to allow their child to go for a day with clear boundaries about pick-up times.
Festival season should be fun: a bit of preparation and some honest discussions with your teenager should ensure that both they, and you, are happy.

How many days is Coachella?
History of Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival – We can trace back the origin of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival to a 1993 concert. Pearl Jam had a dispute with Ticketmaster about the service charges paid on each ticket. As a result, they shifted the concert to the Empire Polo Club.
- The festival proved the site’s viability for hosting large events, and it was chosen for the first Coachella Festival held in October 1999.
- It was a two-day event.
- No event was held in 2000.
- But, Coachella returned as an annual single-day event in April 2001.
- In 2002, it again went back to the two-day format.
Due to demand, Coachella was extended to have a third day in 2007 and eventually a second weekend in 2012. Now it is held on consecutive three-day weekends in April, with the same lineup each weekend. Coachella is one of the world’s illustrious and most profitable music festivals.
In 2017, around 250,000 people attended the festival and organizers made approximately $114.6 million. Apart from music, they also created art installations and sculptures. Around 1997, Goldenvoice was struggling to book concerts against larger companies, and they were unable to offer guarantees as high as their competitors.
They brainstormed their options; the result was the idea of a music festival. They also thought of the idea for the one with multiple venues and multiple performances. Performers were trendy artists who were not that much a chart success. They foresaw a market they could capture, and the rest is history.
