How long is 100 hours a week?
For as long as I can remember, I have worked at least 80-90 hours a week and many times I have pushed past the 100 mark and even to the 120 hours a week many times during huge projects. When I was writing books and developing games at the same time many people would ask me how I maintain this and not fall over dead? I am asked this so much, and recently 3 people just this week, I thought I would write a linkedin post, so I don’t have to keep writing in emails how I do it 🙂 First, let’s do the math – to work 100 hours a week, requires working 7 days a week about 14-15 hours a day.
To many people this may seem insane, non-realistic, or not maintainable, but I can tell you that it is doable if you manage time and don’t WASTE time. For example, I am currently working about 16 hours a day, it’s 2:45 AM in the morning, and I am just getting started with what I am working on, I expect to go another few hours and then stop.
So, what about sleep? This unfortunately is a brick wall, if you have physiological limits where your body gets tired and you can’t keep your eyes open, then working 100 hours a week is simply not going to be possible (almost, we will get back to that).
- I however, never get tired, I can work and work as long as I like, this is clearly not normal.
- For example, I have stayed awake for a record of 10 days at which point I did almost collapse.
- But, we don’t need to go to such extremes to maintain the 100 hour work week.Point is, some people are going to be able to stay awake and not get tired better than others, your mileage may vary.
Let’s get back to the 14-15 hours a day, so first let’s say we cut sleep down to 6 hours, and call it 14 hours of work a day, that’s 20 hours, now we have 4 hours of “free” time!! We can use this to sleep, or work more. But, this 4 hours is basically where you have to “live your life” – you have to eat, exercise, and socialize in 4 hours, but this is a LOT of time if you don’t WASTE it! That means NO TV, NO Facebook, NO hanging out, NO watching cat videos on youtube! All no no’s for the 100+ hour work week.
If you are a very social person and like to go out and party, you aren’t going to be able to do this (but, you can still have fun, we will return to this also). Basically, it’s all about NOT wasting time – eating can’t be a 4 hour odyssey each meal. For example, I make a protein drink in the morning, that’s breakfast and lunch, done.10 mins, that’s it.
For dinner, I might cook something or make something. Always organic, ALWAYS healthy, I never eat fast food – EVER! In other words, I find a way to eat healthy very quickly. This is key. So, for example, if you are married, have a significant other, maybe you can take 45-60 mins for “dinner”, hang out, whatever, watch TV while eating (we watch an episode of something sci-fi usually).
Then you’re other time goes to shower, errands, whatever. Bottom line, you must plan each moment out and NOT waste time. Now, back to fun? Well, say your friends want to go to the movies or dinner, or dancing on Saturday? How do you do that? Well, you need to work MORE!!! Yup, say the week you are going out, maybe you push out 16 hours a day for 3-4 days, then you “bank” the time, so you have an extra 4-6 hours on the weekend to go do something.
Now, what about health? This must take a toll on your body? YES! Working this hard can put you in the hospital. Therefore, like any machine, if you run your body at this level of performance, then you need to make it your temple. That means working out 3-4 times a week (just 30 mins of weights or cardio will do the trick, if you are at the gym longer than 1 hour, your are TALKING too much!).
- Next, your diet.
- You MUST eat healthy, NO fast food, NO crap.
- This is a whole other conversation I am asked about as well a LOT, but bottom line if you can eat 100% organic – do it! Otherwise, eat healthy as possible, read books on the subject, and get off the fast food.
- You want raw, organic, veggies, fruits, some source of protein (preferably NOT animal protein), but if you must make sure its antibiotic and hormone free.
Next, WHY work so hard? Well, that’s a personal and only you can answer that, but if you work 200-250% more than the “average” person, then simply put, you are going to get a LOT more done, more money, more opportunity, more everything. The down side is you are always WORKING – but, this is different from being a “work-a-holic” – I do NOT like working! Just like anyone.
- But, I like learning, building things, reading, etc.
- I have turned my passion into my work, so its tolerable.
- This is key to this – just working 100 hours to get paid more money is NOT worth it, working like this is only worth it if it helps you reach a goal for yourself.
- Finally, what about relationships? Well, this is tough, if you work 100 hours a week and date someone that is jobless, this isn’t going to work, so you have to date someone that works a lot as well, OR ideally, if you both work at home then you can spend time together as you both work, and you can take little breaks here and there as you work, remember you have a good 4 hours a day to do “stuff”.
But, it’s all about balance. However, one thing is sure, in this new world of information and the cost of living, healthcare, etc. sky rocketing – none of us can afford to do the bare minimum.8 hours a days isn’t enough time to get anything done especially if you are a high level tech worker in R&D, hardcore coding, engineering, etc.
- This things simply take an enormous amount of time to pursue.
- And if you think about it, if you work at a large company or a start up and YOU are in charge of things, then you must be working at least 12 hours a day, and probably more with commuting taken into consideration.
- In conclusion, working 100+ hours a week is doable, and maintainable, I do it all the time, I am doing it now.
But, it takes a toll, so if you do join the club, respect it, be healthy, take care of yourself, eat right, exercise, or this will put you in the hospital – but, for those willing to take it to the next level, you can accomplish a LOT working at this level, basically by the time you are 30 imagine living as much and getting as much done as a 75 year old? Good luck! And stop reading this and get back to work 🙂
