  • December 16, 2022 – Theaters
  • June 7, 2023 – DIsney+

Avatar 2 was released in theaters worldwide starting on December 16, 2022, roughly 13 years after the original Avatar wowed audiences for the first time. Following the theatrical run, it made its way to Disney+ on June 7, 2023. As of now, Avatar 3, 4, and 5 are releasing on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028, respectively.

How is Avatar 2 doing in theaters?

A fter being in theaters for just over a month, Avatar: The Way of Water —the long-awaited sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 hit —has officially grossed over $2.024 billion. It took over Spider-Man: No Way Home ‘s spot as the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time last week; to move up to the No.5 spot, currently held by Avengers: Infinity War, it needs to make over $2.05 billion.

  • Now it has become the first ever pandemic-era movie to hit the $2 billion mark and Cameron’s third movie to gross that much in box office receipts.
  • He’s the only director in history to have three movies gross over $2 billion.
  • After 13 years in the making, all eyes were on the Avatar sequel to see if it would make its budget back and turn a profit for Disney.

(Disney spent a reported $460 million to create and promote the movie, according to Variety,) Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the box office has experienced major struggles, causing widespread concern and even bankruptcies in the theater industry.

Then last year’s Top Gun: Maverick seemed to re-energize moviegoers, proving that the theater industry was far from dead. The Tom Cruise-led film grossed over $1.489 billion in 2022 and seemed to be the uncontested, almost sole reason for movie-going’s resurgence—that was, until Avatar: The Way of Water swept in to make $1.5 billion at the end of 2022 and take its spot as the highest grossing movie of last year.

Now, as the movie reaches yet another milestone, the question becomes: How much money can it make before it loses steam? Here’s a breakdown of how and where the movie made its money, where it falls in the all-time box office, and how it speaks, yet again, to Cameron’s ability to make a riveting sequel that gets people back in theaters.

Do I need to see Avatar 2 in theaters?

“You’re making a deal between yourself and a piece of art to give it your full attention. And you don’t when you’re at home,” James Cameron said. 20th Century Studios James Cameron says audiences don’t necessarily have to see Avatar: The Way of Water in theaters—a decent home setup will suffice—but the director highly recommends buying a ticket to see the epic sequel on the big screen. Speaking with NPR about taking audiences on a “new journey” with the long-awaited aquatic sequel to 2009’s Avatar, Cameron says that fully enjoying a film goes far beyond where fans actually watch it—there’s just too many distractions on the small screen.

  1. If you watch Way of Water at home on a reasonably large flat screen TV with a decent sound system and you sit close enough and that way across the room, you’re going to have a good experience,” the director shared.
  2. I think when you start looking at something on a phone, you’re sort of missing the point.

Going to a movie theater is less about the size of the screen and the perfection of the sound system. It’s more about a decision to not multitask.” Cameron added that the ability to avoid distractions is key when it comes to an immersive movie experience, and likened watching a movie to “making a deal between yourself and a piece of art.” “I think that’s the critical part that people are missing.

While some had doubts, given that Avatar: The Way of Water released over 13 years after the original, the opening weekend proved those doubts wrong. The Avatar 2 worldwide box office sales for its first weekend totaled $435 million, a massive success by any estimate. Disney and 20th Century Studios will want Avatar: The Way of Water in theaters earning ticket sales for as long as possible.

The same is true of Disney/Marvel’s previous hit, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Consequently, Avatar 2 will be in theaters for as long as the studio believes it can keep people going to see it. In terms of competition, the only movie that could really draw attention away from Avatar 2 is Disney’s next blockbuster, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,

1. The Longest Movie Certificated by Guinness World Records – The longest film ever made, according to Guinness World Records, is ” The Cure for Insomnia ” (1987), directed by John Henry Timmis IV. It lasts 85 hours and is considered an extraordinary achievement in the film industry.

However, as previously said, most moviegoers and IMDB classify “Logistics” as the longest film in the world. “The Cure for Insomnia” is a one-of-a-kind film in which L.D. Groban, a director, actor, and poet, reads a single scene from his poem “A Cure for Insomnia” over the course of three and a half days.

The movie had some parts where they included short clips from heavy metal music videos and pornographic videos. The film is more of a performance art piece than a typical film, and it has only been shown in its entirety a few times.

Is Avatar 3 confirmed?

Avatar 3 is going to take a lot longer to get to us, but rest assured, we will be returning to Pandora in the future. In June 2023, Disney revealed that the release schedule for all three upcoming Avatar movies would be shifting, starting with Avatar 3 moving by one year from December 2024 to December 2025.

Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 have both moved by three years, meaning the series will be continuing until 2031. And who knows, maybe it’ll be longer than that as it appears to be a tradition that every movie has a release date shift or three. The record-breaking success of Avatar: The Way of Water suggests though that, however long it takes James Cameron to finish his four-movie follow-up to the first movie, it’ll be worth the wait.

Avatar 3 was filmed alongside the sequel meaning that we already know a fair bit about the threequel, so while we begin the extended wait, here’s everything you need to know about Avatar 3,

Will Avatar 2 surpass endgame?

Regardless of how it will continue making at the box office before it leaves theaters, Avatar 2 will still be behind Endgame and Avatar, though it’s impressive it managed to surpass Titanic.

Is Avatar 2 underperforming?

Understanding why some consider Avatar 2 to be a “flop” Despite having strong box office revenues, some call Avatar 2 a ” flop “. People have different interpretations when they consider the movie a flop. Some say that the high budget makes the movie unprofitable and thus a flop since the strong box office sales aren’t enough for the film to break even.

  • Others say that the underperformance of Avatar 2 box office sales compared to Avatar 1 is why the second movie is underperforming relative to the first movie.
  • After analyzing the box office sales for both movies, it will help $DIS investors as well as everyone else understand the dynamics of the two movies’ box office sales.

For the data, I chose to use domestic box office data since international box office data is fragmented. It’s been 12 days (including today) since Avatar 2 has been released domestically. When comparing the first 11 days of both Avatar movies’ box office sales, here’s what we see: Avatar 1 has been able to maintain its box office sales momentum between the $10 million and $20+ million box office sales range daily during its first 11 days in theaters. We don’t see this level of consistency with Avatar 2. However, the amount of money generated in box office revenue per day is a lot higher on average than in the first Avatar movie. If Avatar 1 was able to create the highest-grossing film in box office history, and its box office sales were less stellar than Avatar 2, it shows that Avatar 2 has a great chance at creating a new record in box office history, reaching $3 billion in box office sales. After comparing the first 11 days of box office sales for both Avatar movies, let’s look at things from a weekly perspective. Here’s how Avatar 1 performed each week for 20 weeks since its release: As we can see, the second week generated more box office revenue than the first week. This aspect of the first Avatar movie, which gained momentum mostly to word-of-mouth marketing, is one of the other reasons why I am optimistic that Avatar 2 can do a U-shaped recovery in daily box office sales. It is to be seen how the rest of the week will go. I am confident that word-of-mouth marketing will continue to be the reason why Avatar 2 box office sales will remain strong. Fortune noted that Avatar 2 is James Cameron’s first film to have ever made $100 million in its opening weekend.

There are headwinds with Avatar 2 that other films in 2022 like Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic Park: Dominion didn’t face. The main headwind is the weather. Especially on the East Coast of the US and many parts of Canada and the entire European continent, the harsh winters deter people from going to the theaters.

Also, Avatar 2 isn’t being shown in Russia. Not many people think of Russia as a major market for films. The first Avatar movie generated over $100 million in box office sales in Russia. Though its 2022, we still have rising COVID, flu, and RSV cases globally.

Those three diseases are deterring some people from seeing movies in theaters. There are tailwinds with Avatar 2, Besides the growth in word-of-mouth marketing, Avatar 2 is seeing strong performance in China. The film already generated more advanced ticket sales than T_op Gun: Maverick and Jurassic Park: Dominion,

Unlike most films, Avatar 2 is also offered in $IMAX 3D, where ticket prices are generally a lot higher than your average movie ticket. Considering the strongly positive reviews of the IMAX 3D experience with Avatar 2, I wouldn’t be surprised if more people choose to watch the movie in that format.

  • As someone who has seen the movie in that format, I strongly recommend it,
  • Some will mention the lack of competition in the theaters from release till Feburary when a new Ant-Man movie comes out.
  • That can be another reason why Avatar 2 ‘s momentum can be maintained.
  • The reviews for Avatar 2 are unusually strong.

The LA Times says that the movie will cure your moviegoing blues. The Atlantic says that Avatar 2 puts modern blockbusters to shame. Do you ever hear other blockbuster movies being given strong reviews like that? In my lifetime, never. Data sources: (Avatar 2) (Avatar 1)

Did Avatar 2 cost $2 billion?

How Avatar 2 Cost Disney Over $1 Billion – Disney As the finale of its “2022 Most Valuable Blockbuster” article series, Deadline revealed Avatar: The Way of Water to be the most successful release of last year, even with over $1 billion in expenses. The $1.087 billion total expenses come from production costs ($400 million), prints and ads ($400 million), video costs ($100 million), residuals ($40 million), interest and overheads ($72 million), and participation ($300 million).

Top Gun: Maverick – $753.9 million Thor: Love and Thunder – $547 million Jurassic World: Dominion – $520.3 million Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – $496 million Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – $491 million

Avatar 2 ‘s huge box office haul saw it take home $2.32 billion worldwide, including $683 million domestically, $1.39 billion internationally, and $246 million from China, making it the third-highest-grossing movie ever and surpassing Avengers: Infinity War,

Once the theaters took their cuts, Disney took home $1.27 billion from The Way of Water ‘s theatrical run before generating a further $150 million from home entertainment sales and $200 million from television and streaming deals. The data appears to contract director James Cameron’s pre-release statements claiming the movie was “very f***ing expensive” and maybe “the worst business case in movie history.” As such, he indicated the sequel would “have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history” to “break even,” which would amount to around $2 billion gross.

Even Variety’s box office analysts indicated The Way of Water may need to take home around $1.5 billion to make its money back. And yet, Deadline’s data revealed the total expenses, and therefore the threshold to turn a profit was $1.09 billion, around $400 million less.

Has Avatar 2 made $2 billion yet?

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Becomes Sixth Film in History to Surpass $2 Billion Globally After just six weeks of release, ‘s blockbuster sequel “” has surpassed $2 billion in global ticket sales. It’s the sixth film in history — and first in pandemic times — to cross the coveted milestone, joining an exclusive club that includes “Avatar,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Titanic,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” Now, Cameron is responsible for three of the six-highest grossing movies of all time.

  • He’s also the only director with three films to cross $2 billion.
  • Notably, Zoe Saldaña, who plays Neytiri in the “Avatar” series, has now starred in four of the six films to cross $2 billion.
  • She also appears in both “Avengers: Endgame” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” reprising her “Guardians of the Galaxy” role of Gamora.

Notably, “The Way of Water” has officially hit the lofty goal that Cameron set for himself prior to the film’s release. Before the sequel opened in theaters, he told GQ that “Avatar 2″ represents in movie history” because it needs to become one of the three or four top-grossing movies of all time just to break even.

Analysts believe the film’s breakeven point was close to $1.5 billion, so “The Way of Water” has already been in the black.) But in the coming days, it’ll take down the fourth- and fifth-biggest movies, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($2.07 billion) and “Avengers: Infinity War” ($2.04 billion), to achieve that feat.

The original “Avatar,” which debuted in theaters 13 years ago, remains the biggest movie of all time with $2.9 billion. “Avengers: Endgame” trails closely behind in second place with $2.79 billion, while “Titanic” stands as the third-highest grossing release ever with $2.19 billion.

  1. So far, “The Way of Water” has generated $598 million at the domestic box office and $1.4 billion internationally.
  2. Overseas, the standout markets are China ($229 million), France ($129 million), Germany ($117 million), Korea ($96 million) and the United Kingdom ($81 million).
  3. It’s especially impressive that “Avatar 2” managed to crack $2 billion, a benchmark that’s been impossible in COVID times, because not every market is re-connecting with the Na’vi.

The follow-up isn’t playing in Russia, where the original grossed $116 million, and it’s flopping in Japan with $28 million, a dramatic decrease from the first film’s $176 million haul. The long-delayed sequel to 2009’s “Avatar” opened in December and remained hugely popular in the weeks since its release.

  • Like the original, Imax and 3D screens, as well as repeat customers across all ages and demographics, have propelled ticket sales to stratospheric heights.
  • Which holds the rights to “Avatar” after acquiring 20th Century Fox in 2019, spent roughly $460 million to produce and promote “The Way of Water,” making it one of the most expensive films ever.

Is Avatar 2 better in 3D or IMAX?

The best way to watch Avatar 2: The simple answer – You should watch Avatar 2 in IMAX 3D, ideally on an IMAX screen with single-laser technology. Why? Firstly, James Cameron has ensured the movie’s IMAX presentation will be in 1.90:1 aspect ratio – simply put, you’ll see more of the movie as the screen is taller, and it’s designed for a PLF (premium large format) like IMAX.

Is Avatar 4d worth it?

Avatar: The Way of Water 4DX Vs IMAX, which platform is best to watch this James Cameron epic? After our previous discussion about Avatar potentially reviving the 3D movies format to our recent Avatar: The Way of Water IMAX review it’s time for 4DX to have some input in this debate as we decide which format is best to watch the movie in.4DX combines seat movements with scents, wind and atmospheric effects to immerse views into the cinema whilst IMAX provide a giant screen with immersive audio and beautifully vibrant imagery that in 3D can be rather special indeed if the film is shot specifically for that format.

For some movies, 4DX is better than IMAX and by quite some distance but this is due to many films nowadays not being shot specifically for IMAX and IMAX 3D and as a result don’t have the same impact as a tailored 4DX experience. Disney movies + 4DX are a match made in heaven for the most part but Avatar: The Way of Water poses an issue and that issue is a direct result of the 3D glasses.

The IMAX glasses drag viewers into the story and fully immerse you into the experience as the movie feels like you’re watching a fish tank rather than a flat screen with depth and beautifully layered imagery. This is where the 4DX experience poses a problem as a movie about water, full of fight sequences and more have those 4DX water effects on high alert and the film takes a back seat to you becoming a human window wiper getting rid of the water of your glasses is now a full time 3 hour job and it’s distracting from the experience.

IMAX 3D is the only way to see Avatar: The Way of Water and if you’re going for the first time then you should absolutely dedicate your time to seeing it in this format and this format only. Once you’ve seen it in IMAX 3D then feel free to go and watch the more novelty experience in 4DX as you know the story and can embrace all of the effects without you missing anything or it becoming too much of a distraction.

Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are all in the pipeline and I’m absolutely ready for them although I have a feeling if it goes the same way as this particular instalment then we may become used to the beauty and as a result not appreciate the artistry that has been created.

James Cameron is just showing off in The Way of Water, it’s a film that should have been half as long but it dives into its own arrogance at times (I applaud that, it’s not a negative comment) and showcases some of the most spectacular on-screen work you’ll ever witness in the cinema right now in this very moment.

Three hours flew by and whilst some parts felt unnecessarily padded out the 3D grabs a hold of you, forms a bond and never lets you go. The 4DX throws you even deeper into the experience and it’s an incredibly fun novelty experience but you absolutely need to see this in IMAX 3D first before you dive into the water effects and atmospherics that the 4DX experience provides.

Is Avatar 2 IMAX worthy?

What’s The Best Cinema Format To See Avatar: The Way Of Water It’s been 12 years in the making but we are now only a few short weeks away from Avatar: The Way of Water finally appearing in cinemas. The sequel to 2009’s Avatar, director James Cameron has admitted that the film has cost so much to make and market that it will have to become the fourth or fifth biggest film of all time to make its money back.

  • The worst business case in movie history,” as he bluntly described it.
  • However, as the original is still the biggest money-maker of all time, it does seem possible it could happen.
  • While cynical types will have already decided they aren’t interested, having revisited the original for its recent remaster, I am fully on board the hype train for this one and will be there for the opening weekend come 16 December.

The question is then, which format should you choose to see it in? Is Dolby Cinema the ultimate way to see Avatar: The Way of Water Dolby For a movie such as this, I’d argue that it should be in a premium format, so at the top of the list is IMAX or Dolby Cinema.

I should note straight away that these formats will likely already be sold out for the opening weekend, but if you’re only going to see it once, it’s worth waiting until you can get a seat in one of these formats. Let’s tackle IMAX first. IMAX will be many people’s go-to as Avatar: The Way of Water was filmed with a Sony CineAlta Venice 3D camera which is IMAX certified, which means it’s a digital camera that meets IMAX standards for resolution and image quality.

It also means it’s been captured natively in 3D, so unless you can’t see 3D for some medical reason, I’d suggest it will be worthwhile seeing it in stereoscopic. Cameron has framed the image such that all IMAX theaters will show the movie in the 1.90:1 aspect ratio.

This means it will offer a taller image than standard widescreen “scope” screens, and that alone will make IMAX the go-to choice for many. However, not all IMAX theaters are made the same. First, only a select few have the latest laser-based projectors, and compared to older Xenon-lamp-based projectors, laser will be ideal as it offers a brighter picture (which is important for 3D), with richer colors and contrast.

To complicate things though there are two types of IMAX laser – a single laser system, normally for smaller screens, and a dual-laser, which is brighter, making it ideal for bigger IMAX screens. I’d normally suggest dual laser would be the way to go, but oddly, for Avatar: The Way of Water, it’s actually the single laser that will give you the superior experience.

  1. Avatar: The Way of Water is framed at 1:90:1 in all IMAX screens.
  2. IMAX Corporation The wrinkle is down to high frame rate or HFR technology.
  3. This is where the movie frame rate is increased over the standard 24 frames per second and has been used in the past on films such as The Hobbit series and Gemini Man,

However, its use has proved divisive, due to creating an unnatural-looking image. For the Avatar remaster and Way of Water, Cameron has used a clever system that only increases the frame rate for fast action sequences, so you get all of the benefits of clearer motion, without any of the downsides.

  1. The issue then is that while all IMAX projectors can display HFR, dual laser can only do so at 2K resolution rather than 4K (allegedly due to overheating).
  2. This means that while single laser IMAX will net you 3D, 4K, and HFR, but dual laser will be limited to 2K, HFR.
  3. The other advantage of IMAX Laser is that these screens will also come with 12-channel sound – so you get even more impact and overhead action – it’s always thunderously impressive.

If there isn’t an IMAX laser near you then you’ll be limited to a Xenon lamp-based projector. This will be limited to 2K resolution but can still do HFR – though whether it will or not will be difficult to ascertain – you’ll have to contact your local screen to find out.

  • So, any easy win for IMAX Single-Laser then? Not quite.
  • Dolby Cinema will show the film in 3D, 4K, and HFR, and raise IMAX in two areas – it can do high dynamic range (HDR), giving even more contrast, deeper blacks, and color richness to the image, and also Dolby Atmos sound which delivers even more sonic precision.

Where it loses out to IMAX is sheer scale – as the screens aren’t as large and you’ll be seeing less overall image at 1:85:1 than IMAX 1.90:1 – except if your Dolby theater has a 2.39:1 screen – in which case, technically you’d be seeing even less of the image, despite the wider screen.

Either way, the richness of the Dolby image should prove a perfect match for Avatar: The Way of Water, If neither is an option, then other large formats would be a good choice, which here in the UK would include Odeon iSense, Cineworld Superscreen, Empire IMPACT, and Vue Xtreme – which all offer above-average screen sizes, 4K projection, and Dolby Atmos.

For experience junkies, 4DX could be fun – you won’t get a large screen, Dolby Atmos sound, HDR, or HFR, but you will get seats that move up and down and water and air blasted at you at key moments, which could be fun during the flying sequences – or your worst nightmare – YMMV.

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend it for a first viewing, as it’s likely to be very distracting, but it could be fun for a follow-up. Finally, you have your standard 2K screens with RealD 3D, or if you really have to, plain old 2D. These would be bottom of my list, but still a better option than “waiting for it to come to streaming”.

Ultimately then, for Avatar: The Way of Water it’s a choice between IMAX with single laser, IMAX Xenon or Dolby Cinema. If you can get to a Dolby Screen it’s a tough choice as there’s likely to be an IMAX screen nearby too, but if you would pick only one, I’d say Dolby sits at the top of the pile.

The seats are always very comfortable too, whereas IMAX screens, while generally good in that regard, can be hit and miss – and at a run time of 3 hours 12 mins your posterior will thank you for choosing carefully. Or you could do what I’m doing – and book for both. I’ll see you at the BFI IMAX for opening weekend and the Odeon West End Dolby Cinema a few days later.
